Statement About The Hangings - 26th Jan
Harwich Peninsular Friends of the Earth mounted a coordinated campaign in response to Tendring District Council's proposals to sell part of The Hangings that was illegally acquired by a Housing Developer. The land was a very important part of a local amenity that formed a unique natural environment for wildlife habitat and an area of biodiversity.
The group attended the Council Meeting on Wednesday 25th January 2012 and was deeply disappointed that despite a significant number of objections and a petition, Tendring District Council effectively "rubber stamped" the Planning Committee's decision to sell the land that was illegally grabbed and the consequent trees and wildlife habitat destroyed by the developer.
However, the group's actions did force the Council to ensure that the monies (in excess of £50,000) received from the sale would be ring-fenced for expenditure on The Hangings and we have been given the opportunity to influence how that money is spent.
The Group will monitor the next formal stages of the sale and review all options to ensure that the best possible outcome can be achieved for protecting the unique environment of The Hangings.
The campaign was well received by the local population and enjoyed considerable support over a very short space of time with a strong feeling of disbelief and anger that this sale of public land was happening. We would like to thank everyone that supported the campaign which has attracted media coverage and influenced the decision and request that you continue to support us over the next stages. Watch this space for more details but don't forget you can still send your letters of objection and sign up for Newsletter on our home page.
Many thanks.
